Category: accessible Devices
hi All.
I Was Wondering, is anyone still using a Levelstar Icon? If so, what are you still
using it fore? I found one on ebay last night and couldn't resist ordering it. I got
it because I was interested in trying one out, plus they are a great piece of
assistive tech history. Very interested in knowing your thoughts of the Icon in
2017.
Funny you mention this as I found mine the other day. It would still work well as a word
processor or e-mail reader. You could also use it as a book reader. Since it has the Linux
command line you could carry it around and use it to SSH into other linux servers to
control them. Its very small so would be easy to squeeze into server closets and such. The
browser is getting out of date but will still work for some simple websites.
I really wonder what happened to the company. There site is still up, but it is
quite broken. If they went out of business, that’s a real shame. From what I
could tell, the Icon was a great device. I almost think they should try making an
Icon second generation, maybe using android. I know they tried with the orion,
but it wasn’t successful. It’s pretty sad.
The companies founder went to work at Amazon in the accessibility department.
I happily used a Levelstar Icon until its battery charging circuite stopped working. At the time, it was my voice recorder, email reader, simple web browser, place for jottings and journals, appointment calendar, and music player. Oh, I forgot, BARD book reader. I used its command line for moving files between it and my machines that run GNU Linux, playing text adventures, and logging into hosts with telnet or ssh. I hope you enjoy your Levelstar Icon!
